يعمل فاتسلاف سميل حاليًا كأستاذ متميز في كلية البيئة بجامعة مانيتوبا في وينيبيغ ، كندا. أكمل دراساته العليا في كلية العلوم الطبيعية بجامعة كارولينوم في براغ وكلية علوم الأرض والمعادن بجامعة ولاية بنسلفانيا. تشمل اهتماماته البحثية متعددة التخصصات مجالًا واسعًا من دراسات الطاقة والبيئة والغذاء والسكان والدراسات الاقتصادية والتاريخية ودراسات السياسة العامة ، وقد طبق أيضًا هذه الأساليب في شؤون الطاقة والغذاء والبيئة في الصين.

وهو زميل الجمعية الملكية الكندية (أكاديمية العلوم) وأول شخص غير أمريكي يحصل على جائزة الجمعية الأمريكية لتقدم العلوم لفهم الجمهور للعلوم والتكنولوجيا. لقد كان متحدثًا مدعوًا في أكثر من 250 مؤتمرًا وورشة عمل في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية وكندا وأوروبا وآسيا وأفريقيا ، وحاضر في العديد من الجامعات في أمريكا الشمالية وأوروبا وشرق آسيا وعمل كمستشار للعديد من الولايات المتحدة والاتحاد الأوروبي و المؤسسات الدولية. زوجته إيفا طبيبة وابنه ديفيد كيميائي عضوي تركيبي.
