Dodson, geboren am 11. September 1962 in London, studierte an der Langley Grammar School (1975–81), bevor er an das Collingwood College, Durham, wechselte (1981–2). Er erwarb einen BA an der University of Liverpool (1985) und einen MPhil (1986, Museum Practice and Archaeology) und PhD (1995, Ägyptologie) am Christ’s College, Cambridge. Er lehrte seit Oktober 1996 an der University of Bristol und war von Januar bis Juli 2013 Simpson-Professor für Ägyptologie an der American University in Kairo. Sein Hauptforschungsinteresse gilt dem alten Ägypten mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf dynastischer Geschichte und Chronologie , Grabarchitektur, Sarkophag- und Sargdesign, Kanopenausrüstung und die Geschichte der Ägyptologie; Er ist auch Historiker der Marine des späten 19. und frühen 20. Jahrhunderts und hat über die Königsgräber Großbritanniens geschrieben.
