Bhagat schloss sein Maschinenbaustudium am IIT Delhi ab und absolvierte ein PGP am IIM Ahmedabad. Er begann seine Karriere als Investmentbanker, verließ sie aber nach einigen Jahren, um sich dem Schreiben zu widmen. Er hat zehn Romane und drei Sachbücher geschrieben. Sein erster Roman (Five Point Someone) wurde 2004 veröffentlicht. Seine Romane wurden als Bestseller gelistet. Bhagat hat auch die Drehbücher für Bollywood-Filme wie Kick im Jahr 2014 geschrieben und seine Geschichten für die Filme Kai Po Che! Bhagat gewann den Filmfare Award für das beste Drehbuch für Kai Po Che! bei den 59. Filmfare Awards im Jahr 2014.
