David Kanter ist Professor für Psychologie an der University of Huddersfield. Sein Buch Criminal Shadows (HarperCollins, 1995) gewann den Golden Dagger und den American Anthony Prize. Er ist bekannt für die Entwicklung eines systematischen Systems zur Identifizierung von Tätern in Großbritannien und für die Initiierung eines aufstrebenden Zweigs der Psychologie, der als "Untersuchungspsychologie" bekannt ist.
