Ethnic Groups and Boundaries Today: A Legacy of Fifty Years PDF

Thomas Hylland Eriksen ist Professor für Sozialanthropologie an der Universität Oslo. Der in Oslo geborene Feldforscher hat in Trinidad und Mauritius gearbeitet. Seine Forschungsgebiete umfassen Identität, Nationalismus, Globalisierung und Identitätspolitik. Eriksen beendete seinen dr. polit.-Abschluss 1991 und wurde 1995 im Alter von 33 Jahren zum Professor ernannt. In den Jahren 1993-2001 war er Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Samtiden.
Ein beträchtlicher Teil von Eriksens Arbeit konzentrierte sich auf die Popularisierung der Sozialanthropologie und die Vermittlung von grundlegendem Kulturrelativismus sowie Kritik am norwegischen Nationalismus in der norwegischen öffentlichen Debatte. Er hat das grundlegende Lehrbuch geschrieben, das in den Einführungskursen in Sozialanthropologie an den meisten skandinavischen Universitäten verwendet wird. Das Buch „Small Places – Large Issues“ in englischer Sprache wird auch in Einführungskursen in vielen anderen Ländern verwendet und wurde vielfach übersetzt, ebenso wie sein anderes großes Lehrbuch „Ethnicity and Nationalism: Anthropological Perspectives“. Eriksen schreibt regelmäßig Zeitungsartikel in Skandinavien.
2011 wurde Professor Eriksen vom European Research Council mit einem Advanced Grant ausgezeichnet. Unter der Überschrift „OVERHEATING“ forscht er nun zu drei großen Krisen der Globalisierung – Wirtschaft/Finanzen, Umwelt/Klima und Identität/Kultur. Dieses Projekt ist sowohl vergleichend als auch interdisziplinär angelegt. Es beginnt Ende 2012 und wird 2016 fertiggestellt.
