Bevor er zum IDB kam, war Dr. Iqbal 25 Jahre lang bei der Weltbank tätig, zuletzt als Leiter des Global Islamic Finance Development Center der Weltbank in Istanbul. Er spielte eine maßgebliche Rolle bei der Veröffentlichung des ersten globalen Berichts der Weltbank und der IDB über das islamische Finanzwesen. Er erwarb seinen Ph.D. in International Finance von der George Washington University und war als Professional Faculty an der Carey Business School der Johns Hopkins University tätig.
