Howard Zinn (24. August 1922 – 27. Januar 2010) war ein US-amerikanischer Historiker, Dramatiker, Philosoph, sozialistischer Denker und Veteran des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Er war Vorsitzender der Abteilung für Geschichte und Sozialwissenschaften am Spelman College und Professor für Politikwissenschaft an der Boston University. Zinn schrieb über 20 Bücher, darunter seinen einflussreichen Bestseller A People's History of the United States im Jahr 1980. 2007 veröffentlichte er eine Version davon für jüngere Leser, A Young People's History of the United States.
Zinn beschrieb sich selbst als "so etwas wie ein Anarchist, so etwas wie ein Sozialist. Vielleicht ein demokratischer Sozialist." Er schrieb ausführlich über die Bürgerrechtsbewegung, die Antikriegsbewegung und die Arbeitergeschichte der Vereinigten Staaten. Seine Memoiren You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train (Beacon Press, 2002) waren auch der Titel eines Dokumentarfilms aus dem Jahr 2004 über Zinns Leben und Werk. Zinn wurde am 24. August 1922 in Brooklyn als Sohn einer jüdischen Einwandererfamilie geboren. Sein Vater Eddie Zinn, geboren in Österreich-Ungarn, wanderte vor Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs mit seinem Bruder Samuel in die USA aus. Seine Mutter Jenny (Rabinowitz ) Zinn, ausgewandert aus der ostsibirischen Stadt Irkutsk. Seine Eltern lernten sich zuerst als Arbeiter in derselben Fabrik kennen. Sein Vater arbeitete während der Weltwirtschaftskrise als Grabenbagger und Fensterputzer. Sein Vater und seine Mutter betrieben für kurze Zeit einen Süßwarenladen in der Nachbarschaft und kamen kaum über die Runden. Howard Zinn on Race is Zinn’s choice of the shorter writings and speeches that best reflect his views on America’s most taboo topic. As chairman of the history department at all black women’s Spelman College, Zinn was an outspoken supporter of student activists in the nascent civil rights movement. In "The Southern Mystique," he tells of how he was asked to leave Spelman in 1963 after teaching there for seven years. "Behind every one of the national government’s moves toward racial equality," writes Zinn in one 1965 essay, "lies the sweat and effort of boycotts, picketing, beatings, sit-ins, and mass demonstrations." He firmly believed that bringing people of different races and nationalities together would create a more compassionate world, where equality is a given and not merely a dream.
These writings, which span decades, express Zinn’s steadfast belief that the people have the power to change the status quo, if they only work together and embrace the nearly forgotten American tradition of civil disobedience and revolution. I think he would be demanding of the politicians and asking us to demand of the politicians not the puny reforms we see bandying about Congress, but fundamental change."
