Avijit Gupta erhielt seinen B.A. (Honours) Degree in Geographie im Jahr 1962 und M.A. im Jahr 1964 vom Presidency College, Kolkata, und seinen Ph.D. 1973 von der Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. Zu seinen Forschungsthemen gehören hochgradige Überschwemmungen und Kanalreaktionen, große Flüsse, Auswirkungen des Klimawandels auf große Flüsse und Deltas, urbane Geomorphologie, Fernerkundung in der Geomorphologie sowie Wasser und Entwicklung in den Tropen. Er hat am Presidency College, Kolkata, der Southern Illinois University, der Temple University, der National University of Singapore und der University of Leeds gelehrt. Er ist Autor und Co-Autor von 10 Büchern und etwa 80 begutachteten Zeitschriftenartikeln und Buchkapiteln. Von 1997 bis 2009 war er Vorsitzender der Arbeitsgruppe für große Flüsse der International Association of Geomorphologists und von 1993 bis 1997 Schriftführer der International Association of Geomorphologists. Von 1988 bis 1992 war er Komiteemitglied der International Geographical Union Commission on Measurement, Theory and Application in Geomorphology (COMTAG). Seit 1998 war er Visiting Senior Scientist am Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP) der National University of Singapore und Trainer für interne Schulungsworkshops zum Umweltmanagement des Entwicklungsprogramms der Vereinten Nationen im asiatisch-pazifischen Raum. 1993-94. Derzeit ist er Honorary Principal Fellow, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, University of Wollongong, Australien.
