Han wurde in Richmond, Virginia, als Sohn koreanisch-amerikanischer Eltern geboren und wuchs dort auf.
Sie absolvierte 1998 die Maggie L. Walker Governor's School for Government and International Studies und besuchte dann die University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill.
2006 erhielt sie ihren Master of Fine Arts in kreativem Schreiben an der New School
Während ihres Studiums schrieb Han ihr erstes Buch, den Kinderroman Shug.
