Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (18. Juli 1918 – 5. Dezember 2013) war ein südafrikanischer Anti-Apartheid-Aktivist, der von 1994 bis 1999 als erster Präsident Südafrikas fungierte. Er wurde wiederholt wegen aufrührerischer Aktivitäten verhaftet und im Hochverratsprozess von 1956 erfolglos angeklagt. Vom Marxismus beeinflusst, trat er heimlich der verbotenen South African Communist Party (SACP) bei. Obwohl er sich ursprünglich dem gewaltlosen Protest verschrieben hatte, war er 1961 zusammen mit der SACP Mitbegründer der militanten uMkhonto we Sizwe und leitete eine Sabotagekampagne gegen die Regierung. Er wurde 1962 verhaftet und inhaftiert und nach dem Rivonia-Prozess wegen Verschwörung zum Sturz des Staates zu lebenslanger Haft verurteilt.
