Ormerod's Landing PDF

Leslie Thomas, OBE (22. März 1931 – 6. Mai 2014) war ein walisischer Autor, der vor allem für seinen Comic The Virgin Soldiers bekannt war.

Thomas wurde in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales, geboren. Er wurde im Alter von 12 Jahren zum Waisen, als sein Vater, ein Seemann, auf See verloren ging und seine Mutter nur wenige Monate später an Krebs starb. Anschließend wuchs er im Haus eines Dr. Barnardo auf; Die Geschichte dieser Erziehung war das Thema seines ersten autobiografischen Buches „This Time Next Week“.

Thomas besuchte die Kingston Technical School und belegte anschließend einen Kurs in Journalismus am South-West Essex Technical College in Walthamstow. 1949 wurde er zum Nationaldienst einberufen und trat eine zweijährige Dienstreise beim Royal Army Pay Corps in Singapur an. Dort war er kurzzeitig an der Militäraktion gegen kommunistische Rebellen im malaiischen Notfall beteiligt. Er begann auch kurze Artikel für die Veröffentlichung in englischen Zeitungen zu schreiben.

Nach seiner Rückkehr nach England im Jahr 1951 nahm Thomas seine Arbeit für die lokale Zeitungsgruppe im Norden Londons wieder auf, wo er vor seinem Nationaldienst gearbeitet hatte, aber innerhalb von fünf Jahren arbeitete er für die Nachrichtenagentur Exchange Telegraph, jetzt Extel, und schließlich für die Zeitung London Evening News, zunächst als Unterredakteur, später als Reporter. Er blieb bei den Evening News bis 1965, als er seine Karriere als Schriftsteller in Vollzeit begann.

Historians of the Second World War have hitherto omitted to mention that the first British raid on German-occupied France took place within four months of Dunkirk. It happened at midnight on September 21st, 1940, the landing being made at the small fishing town of Granville, in Normandy.
