Douglas Jerome Preston (* 31. Mai 1956 in London) ist ein US-amerikanischer Journalist und Autor. Obwohl er vor allem für seine Thriller in Zusammenarbeit mit Lincoln Child (einschließlich der Agent Pendergast-Serie und der Gideon Crew-Serie) bekannt ist, hat er auch sechs Soloromane geschrieben, darunter die Wyman Ford-Serie und einen Roman mit dem Titel Jennie, der verfilmt wurde von Disney. Er hat ein halbes Dutzend Sachbücher über Wissenschaft und Erforschung verfasst und schreibt gelegentlich für The New Yorker, Smithsonian und andere Zeitschriften.
Preston wurde in Cambridge, Massachusetts, geboren und wuchs in Wellesley, Massachusetts, auf. Als Absolvent der Cambridge School of Weston in Weston, Massachusetts, und des Pomona College in Claremont, Kalifornien, begann Preston seine schriftstellerische Laufbahn am American Museum of Natural History in New York.
Mit seinem häufigen Mitarbeiter Lincoln Child schuf er die Figur des FBI-Spezialagenten Pendergast, der in vielen ihrer Romane auftaucht, darunter Relic, The Cabinet of Curiosities, Brimstone und White Fire. Weitere Romane des Teams von Preston und Child sind Mount Dragon, Riptide, Thunderhead und The Ice Limit. Später schuf das Duo die Gideon Crew-Serie, die aus Gideon's Sword, Gideon's Corpse und The Lost Island besteht.
