José Saramago ist ein portugiesischer Schriftsteller und Journalist, der am 16. November 1922 in der Region Arinaga (Zentralportugal) als Sohn einer armen Bauernfamilie geboren wurde. * Er begann sein Leben als Schlosser, dann als Journalist und Übersetzer, bevor er sich ganz der Literatur widmete. 1947 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Roman, The Land of Sin, und hörte fast zwanzig Jahre lang auf zu schreiben.1966 veröffentlichte er seinen ersten Gedichtband, Possible Poems. Er hat etwa zwanzig Bücher veröffentlicht und wird von Kritikern als einer der wichtigsten Schriftsteller Portugals angesehen, dank seiner polyphonen Romane, die die portugiesische Geschichte mit einer subtilen Ironie nachzeichnen, die dem Stil Voltaires nahe kommt. - Seit 1959 Mitglied der Kommunistischen Partei Portugals. - Erhielt 1982 den Preis des Internationalen PEN-Clubs und 1995 den portugiesischen Camويسes-Preis. - Im Oktober 1998 erhielt er den Nobelpreis für Literatur für seinen Roman Das Todesjahr von Ricardo Reis – Er war skeptisch gegenüber der offiziellen Darstellung der Ereignisse. 11.
