Seine Bücher wurden mehr als 400 Millionen Mal verkauft, und er war der erste Mensch, der 1 Million E-Books verkaufte. Im Jahr 2016 führte Patterson mit einem Einkommen von 95 Millionen US-Dollar zum dritten Mal in Folge die Forbes-Liste der bestbezahlten Autoren an.
