Chris wurde in Toledo, Ohio, geboren und wuchs in Mansfield, Ohio, auf. Sein Vater war Autobahnpolizist und seine Mutter verkaufte Großgeräte in einem Kaufhaus. Er besuchte die Ohio State University und das Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. Mit 19 Jahren zog er nach Kalifornien und lebte bis 2003 an der Central Coast, als er nach Hawaii zog.
