Henry Rosemont erhielt seinen Ph.D. in Philosophie von der University of Washington und absolvierte ein Postdoc-Studium in Linguistik (und Politik) bei Noam Chomsky am MIT. Seine Forschungs- und Publikationsgebiete sind chinesische Philosophie und Religion – insbesondere der frühe Konfuzianismus – Moral- und politische Theorie, Religionsphilosophie und Sprachphilosophie. Er hat A Chinese Mirror (1991), Rationality & Religious Experience (2001) und zusammen mit Huston Smith das in Kürze erscheinende Is There a Universal ‘Grammar’ of Religion? (2007). Er hat zehn weitere Bücher herausgegeben und/oder übersetzt, darunter Explorations in Early Chinese Cosmology (1984), Leibniz: Writings on China (mit D.J. Cook, 1994), Chinese Texts & Philosophical Contexts und mit Roger T.Ames The Analects of Konfuzius: Eine philosophische Übersetzung (1998) und The Classic of Family Reverence (2008). Von 1982 bis 1984 und erneut von 1993 bis 1994 war er Fulbright-Seniorprofessor für Philosophie und Linguistik an der Fudan-Universität in Shanghai, wo er jetzt Senior Consulting Professor ist, und gleichzeitig Gastprofessor für Religionswissenschaft an der Brown University.

From its origins in the prehistoric past, an ever-evolving Chinese cul-ture has been unique among the world’s civilizations, both in terms of its unbroken continuity and in the rich and varied institutional, material, and conceptual artifacts its peoples have produced. At the same time, this richness and variety guarantees that many of these artifacts will have at least partial counterparts in other civilizations, thus making it difficult to isolate, in brief compass, what it is about Chinese culture that does indeed make it unique.
