Margaret Boden OBE FBA (geboren am 26. November 1936) ist Forschungsprofessorin für Kognitionswissenschaft am Institut für Informatik an der Universität von Sussex, wo ihre Arbeit die Bereiche künstliche Intelligenz, Psychologie, Philosophie sowie Kognitions- und Informatik umfasst.
Frühes Leben und Ausbildung :
Boden wurde in den späten 1940er und 1950er Jahren an der City of London School for Girls ausgebildet. Am Newnham College, Cambridge, erhielt sie erstklassige Auszeichnungen in medizinischen Wissenschaften und erreichte die höchste Punktzahl aller Naturwissenschaften. 1957 studierte sie Geschichte der modernen Philosophie an der von Margaret Masterman geleiteten Cambridge Language Research Unit.
Karriere :
Boden wurde 1959 zur Dozentin für Philosophie an der University of Birmingham ernannt. Von 1962 bis 1964 wurde sie Harkness Fellow an der Harvard University, kehrte dann für ein Jahr nach Birmingham zurück, bevor sie 1965 als Dozentin für Philosophie und Psychologie an die Sussex University wechselte, wo sie arbeitete Später wurde sie 1980 zur Reader und dann zur Professorin ernannt. 1968 promovierte sie in Sozialpsychologie (Fachgebiet: Kognitionswissenschaft) an der Harvard University.
Sie schreibt der Lektüre von „Plans and the Structure of Behavior“ von George A. Miller zu, dass sie erkannte, dass Computerprogrammieransätze auf die gesamte Psychologie angewendet werden könnten.
Boden wurde 1985 Dekanin der School of Social Sciences. Zwei Jahre später wurde sie Gründungsdekanin der School of Cognitive and Computing Sciences (COGS) der University of Sussex, der Vorläuferin der heutigen Fakultät für Informatik der Universität. Seit 1997 ist sie Forschungsprofessorin für Kognitionswissenschaft am Institut für Informatik, wo ihre Arbeit die Bereiche künstliche Intelligenz, Psychologie, Philosophie sowie Kognitions- und Informatik umfasst.
Boden wurde 1983 Fellow der British Academy und war von 1989 bis 1991 deren Vizepräsident. Boden ist Mitglied der Redaktion des Rutherford Journal.
Im Jahr 2001 wurde Boden für ihre Verdienste auf dem Gebiet der Kognitionswissenschaft zum OBE ernannt. Im selben Jahr wurde ihr auch die Ehrendoktorwürde der University of Sussex verliehen. Außerdem erhielt sie die Ehrendoktorwürde der University of Bristol. Ein PhD-Stipendium der jährlich vom Department of Informatics der University of Sussex vergeben wird, wurde ihr zu Ehren benannt.

This book is about human creativity, and how computers (discussed in Chapters 5–8) can help us to understand it. Since I first wrote it my views on what creativity is have remained basically the same. So, apart from minor clarificatory changes, I haven’t altered the main text of the book – except to add one example-program: Douglas Hofstadter’s COPYCAT. I had originally planned to highlight COPYCAT in my discussion of analogy, but after much soul-searching decided not to include it at all. Ifelt that the details of how COPYCAT works were too technical for a general audience, but didn’t want to skate over them for fear of appear- ing to recommend magic; moreover, they were not yet o fficially pub-lished so would not have been easy for readers to find. I soon regretted that decision, so I added a foreword to the 1991 paperback indicating what is interestiinteresting ng about the program while ignoring the details. In this second edition I have taken the opportunity to integrate that brief account of COPYCAT within Chapter 7. I have, however, added two new pieces: one best read before the main text and one after it. The first gives an introductory overview of myaccount of creativity. It distinguishes the three main types of creativity –combinational, exploratory, and transformational – and outlines how farwe can expect computers to match them.
