Smith studierte Sozialphilosophie an der University of Glasgow und am Balliol College, Oxford, und hielt nach seinem Abschluss eine erfolgreiche Reihe öffentlicher Vorlesungen an der University of Edinburgh. Anschließend erhielt er eine Professur für Moralphilosophie in Glasgow und schrieb und veröffentlichte während dieser Zeit The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Smith arbeitete später als Tutor, was ihm erlaubte, durch Europa zu reisen, wo er einige der großen Denker seiner Zeit traf. Smith kehrte dann in sein Land zurück und arbeitete etwa zehn Jahre lang an seinem Buch The Wealth of Nations, das dann 1776 veröffentlicht wurde. Smith starb dann 1790 im Alter von 67 Jahren.
