Picknett wurde im April 1947 in Folkestone, Kent, England, geboren und wuchs in einem angeblichen Spukhaus in York auf, wo er die Park Grove Junior School und die Queen Anne Grammar School besuchte. Nach ihrem Universitätsabschluss mit einem Upper 2nd (hons) Degree in englischer Literatur wurde sie kurzzeitig Lehrerin, Verkäuferin und Stand-up-Comic, bevor sie 1971 nach London zog, um als Praktikantin bei Marshall Cavendish Publications zu arbeiten.
In den 1980er Jahren war sie stellvertretende Herausgeberin von The Unexplained und hat an vielen anderen Publikationen mitgewirkt. Sie war auch eine regelmäßige Mitarbeiterin in verschiedenen Radiosendungen, darunter Michael van Straten und Clive Bull's auf LBC und Talk Radio.
