Untersuchungen des Historikers Henry Louis Gates Jr. ergaben, dass einer von Gladwells Vorfahren mütterlicherseits eine freie jamaikanische farbige Frau (Mischung aus Schwarz und Weiß) war, die Sklavenhalterin war.
