Bret Easton Ellis (* 7. März 1964 in London) ist ein US-amerikanischer Autor, Drehbuchautor, Kurzgeschichtenautor und Regisseur. Ellis galt zunächst als einer der sogenannten literarischen Brat Pack und ist ein selbsternannter Satiriker, dessen Markenzeichen als Schriftsteller der Ausdruck extremer Taten und Meinungen in einem affektlosen Stil ist. Seine Romane haben häufig wiederkehrende Charaktere.
Als Ellis 21 Jahre alt war, erschien sein erster Roman, der umstrittene Bestseller Less Than Zero (1985). Sein dritter Roman, American Psycho (1991), war sein erfolgreichster. Nach seiner Veröffentlichung verurteilte das literarische Establishment es allgemein als übermäßig gewalttätig und frauenfeindlich. Obwohl viele Petitionen zum Verbot des Buches dazu führten, dass Ellis von Simon & Schuster fallen gelassen wurde, überzeugte die lautstarke Kontroverse Alfred A. Knopf, es später in diesem Jahr als Taschenbuch herauszubringen. Ellis' Romane sind zunehmend metafiktional geworden. Lunar Park (2005), eine Pseudo-Memoiren- und Geistergeschichte, erhielt positive Kritiken.
