Lee Child wurde am 29. Oktober 1954 in Coventry, England, geboren, verbrachte aber seine prägenden Jahre in der nahegelegenen Stadt Birmingham. Durch Zufall gewann er ein Stipendium für dieselbe High School, die JRR Tolkien besucht hatte. Er besuchte die juristische Fakultät in Sheffield, England, und nach einer Teilzeitarbeit am Theater wechselte er zu Granada Television in Manchester für eine 18-jährige Karriere als Präsentationsregisseur während des "goldenen Zeitalters" des britischen Fernsehens. Während seiner Amtszeit produzierte seine Firma Brideshead Revisited, The Jewel in the Crown, Prime Suspect und Cracker. Doch 1995 wurde er im Alter von 40 Jahren im Zuge einer Unternehmensrestrukturierung entlassen. Immer ein unersättlicher Leser, beschloss er, eine Gelegenheit zu sehen, bei der andere vielleicht eine Krise gesehen hätten, kaufte Papier und Bleistifte im Wert von sechs Dollar und setzte sich hin, um ein Buch zu schreiben, Killing Floor, das erste in der Jack Reacher-Reihe.
Killing Floor war ein sofortiger Erfolg und brachte die Serie auf den Markt, die mit jeder neuen Ausgabe an Umsatz und Wirkung wuchs. Der erste Jack Reacher-Film, basierend auf dem Roman One Shot und mit Tom Cruise und Rosamund Pike, wurde im Dezember 2012 veröffentlicht.
Lee hat drei Häuser – eine Wohnung in Manhattan, ein Landhaus in Südfrankreich und die Flugzeugkabine, in der er sich gerade aufhält, während er zwischen den beiden reist. In den USA fährt er einen Jaguar mit Kompressor, der im Jaguar-Werk Browns Lane gebaut wurde, dreißig Meter von dem Krankenhaus entfernt, in dem er geboren wurde.
