Peter Grünwald leitet die Machine Learning Group am CWI in Amsterdam, Niederlande. Er ist außerdem ordentlicher Professor für Statistisches Lernen am mathematischen Institut der Universität Leiden. Derzeit ist er Präsident der Association for Computational Learning, der Organisation, die COLT, die weltweit führende jährliche Konferenz zur Theorie des maschinellen Lernens, leitet, war 2015 Co-Programmvorsitzender von COLT und leitete auch UAI – eine weitere Top-ML-Konferenz – in den Jahren 2010/2011. Neben seiner Veröffentlichung an ML-Veranstaltungen wie NIPS, COLT und UAI schreibt er auch regelmäßig für Statistikzeitschriften wie die Annals of Statistics. Er ist Autor des Buches The Minimum Description Length Principle (MIT Press, 2007; siehe hier für eine aktuelle (2020), viel kürzere Einführung), das zum Standardwerk für den MDL-Lernansatz geworden ist. 2010 wurde er mit dem Van Dantzig-Preis, der höchsten niederländischen Auszeichnung für Statistik und Operations Research, ausgezeichnet. Er erhielt NWO VIDI (2005), VICI (2010) und TOP-1 (2016).

Nanobiocatalysis has rapidly developed into a subarea of enzyme biotechnology. It combines the advances in nanotechnology that have generated nanoscale materials of different sizes, shapes, and physicochemical properties, and the excellent characteristics of biocatalysts into an innovative technology.

This book provides an overview of the various relations between nanotechnology and biocatalysis. It discusses the fabrication and application of nanomaterials for the immobilization of enzymes used in the sustainable production of goods and chemicals.

Nanosupports have several advantages compared with bulk solid materials because of their high surface area, which results in a significantly reduced mass transfer limitation and comparatively high enzyme loading. These characteristics are also of great use for applications in the fields of enzymatic biosensors, biofuel cells, bioelectronics, and photoelectrochemical analyte detection, where conductive nanomaterials improve the rate of electron transfer.

The book also presents an overview of nanotoxicology and covers nanostructured enzyme catalysis in organic solvents and its potential application for biodiesel production, probing of enzymatic activity, and identification of enzyme functions of inorganic nanoparticles as enzyme mimics.
