Jean Henri Fabre, (geboren am 22. Dezember 1823 in Saint-Léons, Fr. – gestorben am 11. Fabre war weitgehend Autodidakt und wurde Lehrer am Lycée von Carpentras, Fr. (1842), wurde Physiklehrer am Lycée von Ajaccio, Korsika (1843–51), und erhielt eine Lehrstelle am Lycée von Avignon (1853). Fabre hat wichtige Forschungen zu den Insektenordnungen Hymenoptera (z. B. Bienen und Wespen), Coleoptera (z. B. Käfer) und Orthoptera (z. B. Heuschrecken, Grillen) durchgeführt. Basierend auf seinen Beobachtungen der lähmenden Aktionen von Wespen als Reaktion auf stimulierende Zonen in ihrer Beute beschrieb er die Bedeutung des vererbten Instinkts als Verhaltensmuster bei Insekten. 1866 isolierte er aus der Krapppflanze einen Farbstoff, der später als Alizarin identifiziert wurde und als biologischer Farbstoff nützlich wurde.
