John Hugh Arnold (* 1969) ist ein britischer Historiker. Seit 2016 ist er Professor für Mittelalterliche Geschichte an der University of Cambridge. Zuvor arbeitete er am Birkbeck College der University of London, wo er sich auf das Studium der religiösen Kultur des Mittelalters spezialisierte. Er hat auch viel über Geschichtsschreibung geschrieben und warum Geschichte wichtig ist. Arnold wurde am 28. November 1969 geboren und erhielt seinen Bachelor of Arts in Geschichte und seinen Doktor der Philosophie in Mediävistik von der University of York. Ab 2008 war er Professor für mittelalterliche Geschichte am Birkbeck College der University of London. Er trat dem College 2001 als Lecturer bei. Davor war er Dozent an der University of East Anglia. Er ist Mitglied der Social History Society und der Medieval Academy of America. Arnold ist auf das Studium der mittelalterlichen religiösen Kultur spezialisiert und sagt, dass ihn "Glaube" schon immer fasziniert hat, obwohl er nie an eine Religion geglaubt hat. In seiner Arbeit fragt er: „Warum glauben Menschen, was sie glauben? The book does not primarily provide a chronological narrative, but rather seeks to demonstrate the variety, change, and complexity of religion across this long period, and the numerous different ways in which modern scholarship can approach it. It presents the work of thirty academic authors, from the US, the UK, and Europe, addressing topics that range from early medieval monasticism to late medieval mysticism, from the material wealth of the Church to the spiritual exercises through which certain believers might attempt to improve their souls. Each chapter tells a story, but seeks also to ask how and why ‘Christianity’ took on a particular shape at a particular moment, paying attention to both the spiritual and otherwordly aspects of religion, and the very material and political contexts in which they were often embedded. The book aims to be an indispensable guide to future discussion in the field.
