Er war von 1980 bis 1988 Ehrensekretär der Royal Geographical Society und war Vizepräsident der Gesellschaft. 1991 verlieh ihm die Gesellschaft ihre Gründermedaille. Im selben Jahr wurde er von der Royal Scottish Geographical Society mit der Mungo Park Medal ausgezeichnet. 2002 wurde er von den Royal Academies for Science and the Arts of Belgium geehrt.
