Cassandra Clare wurde am 27. Juli 1973 in Teheran, Iran, geboren und ist eine amerikanisch-iranisch-amerikanische Schriftstellerin und Jugendbuchautorin. Sie ist am besten dafür bekannt, dass sie von 2007 bis zur Veröffentlichung der letzten Folgen im Jahr 2014 die Fantasy-Serie Mortal Instruments verfasst hat. Claire wurde als Judith Rumelt als Tochter amerikanischer Eltern in Teheran, Iran, geboren. Ihre Eltern sind Elizabeth und Richard Romelt. Sie waren als Professoren an der Akademie für Betriebswirtschaftslehre bzw. als Schriftsteller tätig.
Clares Großvater mütterlicherseits war der Filmproduzent Max Rosenberg. Claire ist Jüdin, aber sie beschreibt ihre Familie als nicht religiös.
Als Kind reiste Clare viel und verbrachte Zeit in der Schweiz, in England und Frankreich. Sie kehrte in der High School nach Los Angeles zurück und teilte ihre Zeit seitdem zwischen Kalifornien und New York City auf und arbeitete für verschiedene Unterhaltungsmagazine und Boulevardzeitungen, darunter The Hollywood Reporter.
Während sie in Los Angeles lebte, begann Claire mit dem Schreiben von Romanen unter dem Namen Cassandra Claire. Die Drico-Trilogie, inspiriert von Harry Potter und The Top Secret Diary, inspiriert von Der Herr der Ringe, sind zu beliebten Romanen geworden.
