Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an Austrian writer of Jewish descent. Nel 1939 Stefan Zweig fu costretto a lasciare l'Europa, ormai sull'orlo della guerra, in cerca di un luogo nel quale ricostruire la propria esistenza. Si orientò inizialmente verso gli Stati Uniti, ma a poco a poco la città che aveva accolto molti esuli del tempo, New York, si rivelò incompatibile per lo scrittore austriaco. A partire dal 1941, Zweig si stabilì con la seconda moglie a Petrópolis, vicino a Rio de Janeiro, nonostante a un primo impatto, avvenuto nel 1936, lo scrittore avesse dichiarato di aver trovato il Brasile una terra "priva di interessi per lo spirito". Scritta nel 1941, quest'opera passa in rassegna la storia del paese dal XVI secolo fino al 1940, la sua economia e la sua cultura, fornendone una visione piena di amore per la natura solare e ancora vergine di un paese enorme e dalle infinite potenzialità. Durante la sua permanenza, Zweig ebbe sempre ottimi rapporti con i politici locali, che lo accolsero come una celebrità e gli riservarono i funerali di Stato alla sua morte.
