François-Marie Arouet (21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778) was a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher. Known by his nom de plume Voltaire, he was famous for his wit, and his criticism of Christianity—especially the Roman Catholic Church—and of slavery. La idea general es presentar a Inglaterra como un país modelo, frente a una Francia sumergida en la superstición religiosa. Precisamente, las cartas son en primer lugar una defensa de la tolerancia religiosa. Para la clase media -la burguesía- estas cartas no provocaron el escándalo que despertaron en la nobleza y, por el contrario, fueron uno de los antecedentes de las nuevas ideas de igualdad y libertad que se cristalizarían en 1789.
