Stefan Zweig (1881-1942) was an Austrian writer of Jewish descent. A distinguished Austrian writer and one of the most prominent writers in Europe at the beginning of the last century, he was famous for his extensive studies dealing with the lives of famous writers such as: Tolstoy, Dostoevsky, Balzac and Roman Rolland. C'est à bord d'un luxueux paquebot voguant vers l'Amérique du Sud que Stefan Zweig eut l'inspiration pour cette odyssée biographique. Il médita sur les conditions terribles des voyages d'autrefois, sur l'odeur âcre de la mer chargée de mort qui régnait parmi les marins et les héros, ainsi que sur leur solitude. Ses pensées se tournèrent vers Magellan, ce navigateur qui, le 20 septembre 1519, à l'âge de 39 ans, entreprit le tout premier tour du monde. Un destin véritablement exceptionnel.

Magellan, un Portugais, avait passé sept années de sa vie à combattre en Inde, mais il avait gagné peu de reconnaissance dans sa patrie. C'est alors qu'il convainquit le roi d'Espagne, Charles-Quint, d'un projet audacieux : "Il existe un passage reliant l'océan Atlantique à l'océan Indien. Donnez-moi une flotte, et je vous montrerai ce passage en faisant le tour de la terre d'est en ouest" (bien qu'il ignorait l'existence de l'océan Pacifique à l'époque). Malgré les jalousies espagnoles, les erreurs cartographiques, les rivalités, les mutineries, les désertions de ses lieutenants pendant la traversée, les froids polaires, la faim et les maladies, rien ne saura ébranler la détermination de Magellan. Il découvrira finalement, à l'extrême sud du continent américain, le détroit qui porte aujourd'hui son nom.

Partie de Séville avec cinq navires et 265 hommes, l'expédition reviendra trois ans plus tard, réduite à un seul rafiot et seulement 18 hommes. Elle était épuisée, mais glorieuse. Malheureusement, Magellan trouva une fin absurde lors d'une altercation avec des indigènes aux Philippines, après avoir accompli son exploit.

Dans ce magnifique roman d'aventures, Stefan Zweig célèbre la volonté héroïque de Magellan. Il démontre que "lorsqu'une idée est animée par le génie et portée par la passion, elle est plus puissante que tous les éléments réunis, et qu'un homme, avec sa vie éphémère, peut transformer en réalité et en vérité impérissable ce qui semblait être un rêve pour des générations entières". "Magellan" est un récit épique de cette incroyable aventure humaine.
