Stephen King is an American author best known for his contributions to the horror, supernatural fiction, and suspense genres. He was born in Portland, Maine in 1947 and began his writing career as a teenager, submitting short stories to various magazines. After graduating from college, King worked as a teacher while continuing to write in his spare time. His breakthrough novel, "Carrie," was published in 1974 and became a bestseller, launching his career as a full-time writer.

King is known for his prolific output, having written over 60 novels and 200 short stories throughout his career. Bei Sara ließ sich Stephen King zum Teil von Daphne du Mauriers Klassiker Rebecca inspirieren, doch will er in seinem Horror- und Liebesroman natürlich nicht nur Tribut zollen. Wie in Mauriers Roman Manderley geht auch in Kings geheimnisvollem Landhaus Sara am Ufer des abgelegenen Dark Score Lake der Geist der kürzlich verstorbenen Gutsherrin umher. In Sara treiben jedoch gleich ganze Familien von blutrünstigen Dämonen ihr Unwesen. Bei seinen Nachforschungen zum Tod seiner Frau weckt der Protagonist und Romanautor Michael Noonan gleich sämtliche schlafende Geister. Nach und nach stellt sich heraus, daß seine Frau entweder selbst etwas zu verbergen hatte oder irgendeinem schrecklichen Skandal auf dem Grunde des Dark Score Lake auf der Spur war. Wie auch in Stephen Kings letztem Buch Glas ist Sara stellenweise nicht gerade besonders realistisch, und allzu neugierige Erzähler laufen deshalb Gefahr, diese Welt zu verlassen und eine andere, ziemlich feindselige zu betreten.
Auch spukt in Sara der Geist von Herman Melville und Ray Bradbury: während des gesamten Buches spürt der Leser die Autoren förmlich und dasselbe gilt auch für die beiden Romanzen des Buches (der Held sinnt über seine Ehe nach und verliebt sich dabei in eine junge alleinstehende Mutter mit einer bezaubernden übersinnlichen Tochter). Zudem enthält das Buch eine heitere Satire auf die Welt der Bestseller: An gegebener Stelle klagt der Protagonist sein Leid mit den Worten: "Publicity machen ist, als ob man in ein Sushi-Restaurant geht und selbst das Sushi ist." Durch die intensive Beschäftigung mit der Liebe, kinderreichen Familien, dem Leben des Protagonisten und Kindern in Gefahr erinnert das Buch an einen Roman von John Irving. Gleichzeitig ist es aber auch ein Stephen-King-Klassiker, voll von geistreichen Phrasen, sarkastischem Humor und blutrünstigen Monstern, die ihre Krallen nach Ihnen ausstrecken, während Sie unter Ihrer Bettdecke kauern.
