Der einzige Roman Stefan Zweigs handelt von "zweierlei Mitleid": dem echten, "das entschlossen ist, geduldig und mitduldend alles durchzustehen", und dem falschen, das nur "Ungeduld des Herzens" ist, "sich möglichst schnell freizumachen sucht von der peinlichen Ergriffenheit vor einem fremden Unglück". In solche peinliche Ergriffenheit gerät im Sommer 1914 der in einer ungarischen Kleinstadt in Garnison liegende junge Leutnant Hofmiller. Die leidenschaftliche Liebe, die ihm die gelähmte Edith entgegenbringt, erwidert er nur halben Herzens, aber das Hochgefühl ihrer Zuneigung, die Bitten des Vaters und das Zureden des Arztes Dr. Condor, der sich von Hofmillers Einfluß heilende Wirkung verspricht, bestimmen ihn am Ende, sich mit dem Mädchen zu verloben. Er tut es aus Mitleid, das eigentlich "Ungeduld des Herzens" ist. In einem Anfall von Feigheit läßt er sich hinreißen, seine Verlobung öffentlich abzuleugnen. Den sittlichen Zusammenbruch, der dies für ihn bedeutet, will er durch Selbstmord sühnen, doch das Eingreifen eines Vorgesetzten erwirkt statt dessen seine Versetzung. Zwar will er, durch seelische Erschütterung geläutert, die Bindung an Edith erneuern, doch kommt ihm der Freitod der Freundin zuvor.
