En este volumen clásico, Jean Piaget trata de explicar el desarrollo y la formación del conocimiento recurriendo a un proceso central de equilibración. Para ello parte de una idea básica: el conocimiento no proceden ni de la experiencia de los objetos, ni de una programación innata en el sujeto, sino de construcciones sucesivas con constantes elaboraciones de nuevas estructuras. Por diferentes que sean los fines perseguidos por la acción y el pensamiento, el sujeto trata de evitar la incoherencia y tiende siempre a ciertas formas de equilibrio, pero sin alcanzar jamás una definitiva: son tan sólo fases provisionales que buscan conservar el equilibrio anterior sin sacrificar lo ya logrado y superar el obstáculo que ha generado el desequilibrio. El concepto central que parece imponerse en la explicación del desarrollo cognitivo es, por tanto, el de una mejora de las formas de equilibrio, o, dicho de otro modo, de una «equilibración maximizadora».
