Alexander Pushkin, a renowned poet, novelist, and playwright, was born in Moscow on June 6, 1799. Raised in an aristocratic family, he lived a life of luxury. His mother, Nadezhd Osipavna, was the granddaughter of Ibrahim Janipal, an African who served as a close officer to Tsar Peter I. Pushkin is hailed as one of the greatest Russian poets of the nineteenth century and is often referred to as the "Prince of Poets." Thus, a translation of Pushkin’s ‘‘little tragedies’’ to the English-speaking public requires a few words placing the work in its context. The ‘‘little tragedies’’ is the name traditionally given to the col- lection of Pushkin’s four short dramas in verse, The Miserly Knight, Mozart and Salieri, The Stone Guest, and A Feast During the Plague.1 These four dramas were never published together in Pushkin’s lifetime: indeed, The Stone Guest was not printed until after his death.
