Michael Goodchild es geógrafo y pionero en el campo de la ciencia de la información geográfica (SIG). Nació el 24 de febrero de 1944 en Surrey, Inglaterra, y obtuvo su doctorado en geografía en la Universidad de Bristol en 1969.
Goodchild es conocido por su investigación sobre SIG, análisis espacial y sensores remotos. Es autor o coautor de más de 15 libros y más de 500 artículos, y ha recibido numerosos premios por sus contribuciones al campo de la geografía y SIG.
Además de su trabajo académico, Goodchild ha estado involucrado en varias organizaciones e iniciativas relacionadas con GIS, incluso como editor de la revista "Geographical Analysis" y como presidente fundador del Centro Nacional de Información y Análisis Geográfico (NCGIA) en los Estados Unidos.
Goodchild es actualmente profesor emérito de geografía en la Universidad de California, Santa Bárbara, y continúa activo en la investigación y la enseñanza.
