El Dr. Simon Bell es un silvicultor convertido en arquitecto paisajista. Está interesado en aspectos del paisaje más amplio, como los bosques, los paisajes rurales y salvajes, así como la zona periurbana. Esto incluye aspectos de planificación y diseño, estética del paisaje forestal, silvicultura urbana, espacios azules urbanos, recreación al aire libre y los beneficios para la salud y el bienestar de la exposición a la naturaleza en dichas áreas. La accesibilidad de personas de diversos orígenes a tales paisajes también ha sido una característica de su investigación y práctica.
Simon se educó en silvicultura en la Universidad de Gales, Bangor (ahora Universidad de Bangor), arquitectura paisajista en la Universidad de Edimburgo y se doctoró en arquitectura paisajista en la Universidad de Ciencias de la Vida de Estonia, donde también es catedrático y director del departamento. de Arquitectura del Paisaje.
Antes de la academia, Simon trabajó durante 20 años para la Comisión Forestal, donde terminó su tiempo como Arquitecto Paisajista Jefe. Ha trabajado en todo el Reino Unido y también extensamente en proyectos de diseño forestal y como formador en Canadá y EE. UU., así como en Irlanda, Finlandia y los Estados bálticos. De 2012 a 2018, Simon fue presidente del Consejo Europeo de Escuelas de Arquitectura Paisajista (ECLAS). Este organismo representa el interés de los educadores e investigadores de la arquitectura del paisaje, celebra una prestigiosa conferencia anual, presenta premios para la enseñanza y la investigación y es propietario de la Revista de Arquitectura del Paisaje.
