Thomas nació en Newport, Monmouthshire, Gales. Quedó huérfano a la edad de 12 años, cuando su padre marinero se perdió en el mar y su madre murió solo unos meses después de cáncer. Thomas asistió a la Kingston Technical School y luego tomó un curso de periodismo en South-West Essex Technical College en Walthamstow. En 1949 fue llamado al Servicio Nacional y se embarcó en un período de servicio de dos años en Singapur con el Royal Army Pay Corps.
