Michael Farries Ashby es un ingeniero metalúrgico británico. Se desempeñó como profesor de investigación de la Royal Society e investigador principal (PI) en el Centro de diseño de ingeniería de la Universidad de Cambridge. Es conocido por sus contribuciones en Ciencia de Materiales en el campo de la selección de materiales. En 1990, Ashby fue elegido miembro de la Academia Nacional de Ingeniería por sus destacadas contribuciones a la comprensión del comportamiento mecánico de los materiales y por el desarrollo de formatos útiles para el diseño. Ashby es hijo del destacado botánico y educador Lord Ashby. Recibió su título de Bachelor of Arts en Metalurgia en 1957 (con honores de primera clase); su maestría en artes en 1959 y su doctorado en 1961.
