Thomas nació en Newport, Monmouthshire, Gales. Quedó huérfano a la edad de 12 años, cuando su padre marinero se perdió en el mar y su madre murió solo unos meses después de cáncer. Historians of the Second World War have hitherto omitted to mention that the first British raid on German-occupied France took place within four months of Dunkirk.
