Robert James Selby nació en Brooklyn, Nueva York, segundo hijo de Sydney y Estelle (Mentzer) Selby. Su padre dirigía una planta de procesamiento de alimentos frente al mar en Brooklyn y su madre era ama de casa y voluntaria de la Cruz Roja. El compañero de vida de Bob desde los 15 años y su esposa, Susan Sorkin Selby, recuerdan haber pasado la mayor parte de su juventud en salones de billar, ganando dinero y preocupando a su madre. La educación temprana de Selby fue en el sistema de escuelas públicas de la ciudad de Nueva York.
