José Saramago es un escritor y periodista portugués nacido el 16 de noviembre de 1922 en la región de Arinaga (Portugal central) en el seno de una familia de agricultores pobres. * Comenzó su vida como cerrajero, luego como periodista y traductor, antes de dedicarse por completo a la literatura. Publicó su primera novela, La tierra del pecado, en 1947, y dejó de escribir durante casi veinte años.En 1966, publicó su primer poemario, Poemas posibles.
