Peter Grünwald dirige el grupo de aprendizaje automático en CWI en Ámsterdam, Países Bajos. También es profesor titular de Aprendizaje Estadístico en el instituto de matemáticas de la Universidad de Leiden. Actualmente presidente de la Association for Computational Learning, la organización que dirige COLT, la principal conferencia anual mundial sobre teoría del aprendizaje automático, fue coprograma de COLT en 2015 y también presidió la UAI, otra importante conferencia de ML, en 2010/2011. Además de publicar en lugares de ML como NIPS, COLT y UAI, también colabora con regularidad en revistas de estadística como Annals of Statistics. Es el autor del libro The Minimum Description Length Principle, (MIT Press, 2007; ver aquí una introducción actualizada (2020), mucho más corta), que se ha convertido en la referencia estándar para el enfoque MDL para el aprendizaje. The process of inductive inference—to infer general laws and principles from particular instances—is the basis of statistical modeling, pattern recognition, and machine learning.
