Farouk El-Baz è uno scienziato e geologo egiziano-americano che ha svolto un ruolo cruciale nel programma spaziale degli Stati Uniti, in particolare nelle missioni Apollo sulla luna. È nato il 2 gennaio 1938 a Zagazig, in Egitto, e ha conseguito il dottorato di ricerca. in geologia presso la Missouri University of Science and Technology.
El-Baz è entrato a far parte della NASA nel 1967 come ricercatore ed è diventato parte integrante del programma Apollo. Era responsabile dell'addestramento degli astronauti sulla geologia lunare ed è stato determinante nella selezione dei siti di atterraggio per le missioni Apollo. È accreditato di aver sviluppato la tecnica dell'utilizzo di immagini orbitali per studiare e mappare la superficie della luna, che ha contribuito a identificare potenziali siti di atterraggio e comprendere la geologia della luna.
Dopo aver lasciato la NASA nel 1975, El-Baz ha lavorato per diverse organizzazioni, tra cui la National Geographic Society, dove ha lavorato come consulente scientifico. È stato anche direttore del Center for Remote Sensing presso la Boston University, dove ha continuato la sua ricerca sull'uso della tecnologia di telerilevamento in geologia e archeologia.
