Levtzion fue un erudito de la historia africana, el Cercano Oriente, estudios islámicos y africanos, y especialmente el Islam en África. Enseñó en (a partir de 1965) y fue Profesor de Historia y Estudios Asiáticos y Africanos y Decano de la Facultad de Humanidades (1978-1981) en la Universidad Hebrea de Jerusalén, Director del Instituto Ben-Zvi para el Estudio de Comunidades Judías en el Este (1982-1987), el Presidente de la Universidad Abierta de Israel (1987-1992), el Director Ejecutivo del Instituto Van Leer Jerusalem (1994-1997), y el Presidente del Consejo de Educación Superior en Comité de Planificación y Presupuesto de Israel (1997-2003). Challenging conventional assumptions, the contributors to this interdisciplinary volume argue that premodern Muslim societies had diverse and changing varieties of public spheres, constructed according to premises different from those of Western societies. The public sphere, conceptualized as a separate and autonomous sphere between the official and private, is used to shed new light on familiar topics in Islamic history, such as the role of the shari`a (Islamic religious law), the `ulama’ (Islamic scholars), schools of law, Sufi brotherhoods, the Islamic endowment institution, and the relationship between power and culture, rulers and community, from the ninth to twentieth centuries.
