Il était un écrivain américain de science-fiction et d'histoires d'horreur, surtout connu pour sa créativité. Né à Providence, Rhode Island, Lovecraft a passé la majeure partie de sa vie en Nouvelle-Angleterre. Il est né riche, mais sa fortune familiale a été gaspillée peu de temps après la mort de son grand-père. En 1913, il a écrit une lettre critique au magazine Pulp qui l'a finalement conduit à co-écrire le roman de Pulp. Pendant l'entre-deux-guerres, il a écrit et publié des histoires axées sur son interprétation de la place de l'humanité dans l'univers. Selon lui, l'humanité n'était qu'une infime partie d'un univers indifférent qui pouvait être emporté à tout instant. Ces histoires comprenaient également des éléments fascinants qui représentent la fragilité perçue de l'anthropocentrisme. Lovecraft a rejoint le petit club de lecture "Kalem" lorsqu'il a déménagé pour la première fois à New York, et est devenu plus tard le centre d'un groupe plus large d'auteurs connu sous le nom de "Lovecraft Circle". Ce groupe a souvent écrit des histoires qui partagent des détails les uns avec les autres. C'était un écrivain prolifique. Il a entretenu une correspondance avec de nombreux auteurs et conservateurs littéraires différents. Selon certaines estimations, il a écrit près de 100 000 lettres au cours de sa vie. Dans ces lettres, il discutait de sa vision du monde et de sa vie quotidienne, et enseignait à de jeunes auteurs, tels qu'August Derleth, Donald Wanderer et Robert Bloch.
