Dodson, né à Londres le 11 septembre 1962, a étudié à la Langley Grammar School (1975-1981), avant de déménager au Collingwood College, Durham (1981-2). Il a obtenu un BA à l'Université de Liverpool (1985), un MPhil (1986, Museum Practice and Archaeology) et un PhD (1995, Egyptology) au Christ's College, Cambridge.
