Né Jerome David Salinger le 1er janvier 1919, il était un écrivain américain surtout connu pour son roman de 1951 The Catcher in the Rye. Avant sa publication, Salinger a publié plusieurs nouvelles dans le magazine Story et a servi pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. En 1948, sa célèbre histoire "A Perfect Day for Bananafish" est apparue dans The New Yorker, qui a publié plusieurs de ses œuvres ultérieures.
The Catcher in the Rye a été un succès populaire instantané. La représentation de Salinger de l'aliénation chez les adolescentes et de la perte de l'innocence du protagoniste Holden Caulfield a été soutenue, en particulier parmi les lecteurs adolescents. Le roman a été largement lu et a suscité la controverse, et son succès a suscité l'intérêt et l'examen du public. Salinger est devenu un éditeur solitaire et moins fréquent. Catcher a suivi avec une collection d'histoires courtes, Nine Stories (1953); Franny & Zoe (1961), volume contenant un roman et une nouvelle ; et un volume contenant deux romans, Raising the Ceiling Beam High, The Carpenters et Seymour: An Introduction (1963).
Le dernier ouvrage publié de Salinger, le roman "Hapworth 16, 1924", est paru dans The New Yorker le 19 juin 1965. Après cela, Salinger a lutté contre une attention indésirable, y compris une bataille juridique dans les années 1980 avec le biographe Ian Hamilton et sa publication à la fin Années 90 à partir des mémoires écrites par deux personnes proches de lui : Joyce Maynard, une ancienne amante ; et sa fille Margaret Salinger.
