Le Dalaï Lama est le chef religieux suprême des bouddhistes tibétains et jusqu'en 1959 après JC, le Dalaï Lama représentait le leadership spirituel et mondain au Tibet.
Il s'agit bien sûr d'un moine bouddhiste du groupe Gelugpa, fondé par Tsongkhapa (1357-1419).
Le titre de roi du Tibet et successeur de Bouddha aux yeux de ses disciples. Le dernier à détenir ce titre fut le 14e dalaï-lama, né à Shanghai en 1935, alors qu'il avait quatre ans lorsqu'un groupe de lamas le considérait comme le successeur du 13e dalaï-lama. Il a ensuite été érigé à Lhassa en 1940 et en est venu à être considéré comme un "Bouddha vivant".
C'était un pacifiste. Il a remporté le prix Nobel de la paix en 1989 pour sa lutte pacifique pour la libération du Tibet. Il a toujours préconisé des politiques non violentes, même face à une agression extrême. Il est également devenu le premier lauréat du prix Nobel à être honoré pour son intérêt pour les problèmes environnementaux mondiaux.
