José Saramago est un écrivain et journaliste portugais né le 16 novembre 1922 dans la région d'Arinaga (centre du Portugal) dans une famille de paysans pauvres. * Il a commencé sa vie comme serrurier, puis comme journaliste et traducteur, avant de se consacrer entièrement à la littérature. Il publie son premier roman, The Land of Sin, en 1947, et arrête d'écrire pendant près de vingt ans.En 1966, il publie son premier recueil de poésie, Possible Poems.
