Chris est né à Toledo, Ohio et a grandi à Mansfield, Ohio. Son père était patrouilleur routier et sa mère vendait du gros électroménager dans un grand magasin. Il a fréquenté l'Ohio State University et le Brooks Institute of Photography à Santa Barbara. Il a déménagé en Californie à l'âge de 19 ans et a vécu sur la côte centrale jusqu'en 2003, date à laquelle il a déménagé à Hawaï.

Avant de publier son premier roman, Practical Demonkeeping en 1992, il a travaillé comme couvreur, commis d'épicerie, vérificateur de nuit d'hôtel et courtier d'assurance, serveur, photographe et DJ rock and roll. Chris s'est appuyé sur toutes ces expériences de travail pour créer les personnages de ses livres. Lorsqu'il n'écrit pas, Chris aime le kayak de mer, la plongée sous-marine, la photographie et la peinture à l'acrylique et à l'huile. Il vit à San Fransisco.
